620 N888PV Departs McMinnville....and Comes Back? Aklak's C-GDHC at Herschel Island

  • McMinnville, OR (KMMV/MMV) - Honolulu, HI (PHNL/HNL)

After having previously filed several times this week, N888PV has now departed McMinnville for Honolulu. The crossing is expected to run 15 hours and 29 minutes to the first stop in Hawaii; from there, over the coming days the aircraft will continue to Majuro, Pohnpei and finally Biak, Indonesia.

Now, just prior to uploading this post, it appears as though the aircraft has turned back for McMinnville again.

Photos from Keflavík and Update on First Flying in Japan

Although we have seen all three of the aircraft below in earlier blog posts, the location of the photographs is different, and they were nice shots. So below you'll find the delivery flights for 9A-TOC heading from the U.S. to Croatia, and for C-GLKB/C-GPOQ returning from Turkey to Canada.

You will also notice that these mark the switch in default size of the image here at TwinOtterSpotter, as I had done at Dash8Spotter yesterday. Moving forward the display size is smaller to accomodate the pending re-size of the width of the blog. The manual re-sizing of the existing photographs here at TOS is a monumental task, so it will be done working back in date order.

The two Series 400 delivered to First Flying in Japan continue flight training duties in preparation for their official service entry. While JA202D has been based at Kagoshima on Kyushu, JA201D has been at Okinawa's Naha Airport, and both will enter service in August from Okinawa serving destinations in the Ryukyu chain.

Loganair Wins PSO Contract, N223AL goes to CSPA Nationals, N888PV to Honolulu?

Loganair Awarded Scottish Public Service Obligation Contract

As expected, Loganair has now been officially awarded the Scottish Government's Public Service Obligation contract for the next four years. Coinciding with the contract, additional services have been added with an increase of flights to Tiree and Barra, and an improvement to the schedule for Campbeltown.

Loganair currently operates two DHC-6-400's (G-HIAL and G-SGTS) leased from Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd., and one DHC-6-300 (G-BVVK). One other DHC-6-300 is parked at Glasgow awaiting return to the lessor.

Over the last weekend I built Dash8Spotter, which you are welcome to check out by clicking on the banner below. Keeping in mind the beginning days of TwinOtterSpotter in 2012, I hope that there will be a similar amount of growth as Dash8Spotter progresses as well. Although I spent 20+ years around the DHC-8, building the information will be a learning experience for me as well, as I just don't know as much off the top of my head as with the Twin Otter. In any event, I think that there is good potential to develop the new blog in the same way as this one has grown.

Once the U.S. registered skydivers arrive in Canada, I normally don't note their movements, however today's trip out west is a little unusual. N223AL arrived in Canada on 22-May-2015, and is normally based in Québec.

MSN 655 9N-AKM Returns to Tara Air

____________________________________________________________________________________

  • The DHC-6 Operators Page has been updated

____________________________________________________________________________________

Pictured below is MSN 655, 9N-AKM courtesy of AviationNepal. This aircraft is a rebuild, formerly known as 9N-ABQ which had suffered accidents in 1997 and 2002 and was subsequently grounded in Kathmandu for a further ten years. It was repaired in Jan-2012 to be operated by Tara Air, however it was damaged again in Aug-2012, and then Sep-2012, the latter of which necessitated the rebuild that was completed in 2015. It had been offered for sale with a TT of 25,190 hrs with zero time engines and new wings.

According to AviationNepal the aircraft has returned to Tara Air, and the style of the registration and Nepal flag do match the recently delivered DHC-6-400 9N-AKL, however minus the titles.

MysteriousMerpati

With thanks to Edi Nurprasetya, an interesting photo taken at the former Mepati Nusantara facility located at Biak's Frans Kaisiepo Airport. I have added below that an earlier satellite photo depicting the same area, although the aircraft have been moved around a bit since.

I am trying to determine specifically which aircraft are pictured, as the only one that is identifiable is MSN 481 PK-NUS (at far left, and likely the one south of the hangar in the satellite image). The remaining three visible would match those north of the hangar in the satellite, two minus their wings and one minus the wings and tail, and partially under cover.

If Merpati only had four Twin Otters it would be pretty easy to determine the identities of the ones below, but of course that would be far too easy - unfortunately there were at least six.

The one identifiable aircraft is PK-NUS, and I believe the balance are perhaps MSN 487 PK-NUO, MSN 472 PK-NUV and MSN 443 PK-NUZ.

There remains at minimum, two aircraft that don't appear; one being MSN 551 PK-NVA which is seen at Biak as well in the bottom picture (in the latest Merpati colour scheme) and MSN 383 PK-NUH which was last known in the orange fuselage Indonesia Post scheme.

Confirmation and alternate theories are welcome as always!

45 9A-TOC Arrives in Zagreb for European Coastal, Photo of First Tara Air Series 400 in Nepal

Over the past few months there have been fairly regular suggestions about making TwinOtterSpotter into a subscription newsletter in an effort to offset the time and effort needed to gather and prepare the information. In my mind, that's about the last thing I would like to do, and I am committed to do everything possible to see things remain status-quo. It is critical however that there is additional advertising revenue, or just simple contributions to continue to make this work.

Promote your company via top/side banner or direct to subscriber advertisements, or consider your own full page within TwinOtterSpotter to market your product or service. Fully 50% of the readers of the web version each day are first time visitors, so there is a consistent flow of new potential customers.

TwinOtterSpotter offers the DHC-6 community worldwide the best single source for news, photos and operator/fleet information. Other alternatives barely scratch the surface of types like the DHC-6, but that is what TwinOtterSpotter is all about, exclusively.

9A-TOC has touched down in Zagreb for European Coastal Airlines. The delivery flight began from the Ikhana Group facility in Murrieta, CA on 17-Jul-2015 and covered just under 6,500 miles en route.

9A-TOC is aircraft number three for European Coastal, with the second (9A-TOB) due for delivery from RUAG Aviation in Bern, Switzerland shortly. Aircraft number four (MSN 96 9A-TOE) will come out of Murrieta upon completion of the 200HG™ upgrade work. Those of us in Canada will remember MSN 96 as the former C-FWTE last operated by Westcoast Air.

620 N888PV Returns to Rutherfordton and Departs to Salina, KS

N888PV returned to Rutherfordton from Louisburg today, after having been present there since 29-Jun-2015. It is scheduled to depart shortly for Salina, KS and at a distance of 900+ miles that would seem to indicate that ferry tanks have been installed, quite possibly the reason for the trip to Louisburg.

Subscriber Update

On a completely different note, there has actually been a nice increase in the number of subscribers over the past week, something that has been easier to determine with the change in mail feeds. Additionally, with better analytics available behind the scenes I can see that the open rate (the number of people who open the subscription e-mail) is currently running a solid 30% higher than the average for similar daily newsletter type services, which is great to see.

Remember that if you are receiving TwinOtterSpotter via email subscription, if you are not seeing the title banner or photographs, you just need to give your email program permission to download the images.

Items that are posted on the blog after about 12:00pm will appear on the email version the following day. So if you are looking for the latest information, checking the blog directly in the afternoon or evening will give you anything that has been added after 12:00pm.
